Weeds formed in Leeds in 1985. They have taken their time. Their debut EP, ‘Feed The Creature’, came out in March last year and announced a band who sounded like they had never been away, because in every meaningful sense they hadn’t. Now comes ‘Glorious Times’, four tracks released this month, and they’ve called it The Difficult 2nd EP. It isn’t.
The band are spread across the country now and getting everyone in the same room takes logistics. But you wouldn’t know it from the music. ‘Glorious Times’ sounds cohesive, alive and fully inhabited. Fresh and crisp, but with real weight behind it. The kind of record that fills a room without trying to. Four tracks: ‘Glorious Times’, ‘Mother Tongue’, ‘Penny Arcade’ and ‘Tall Buildings’. Clever wordplay throughout. A bass that doesn’t sit in the mix so much as anchor the whole thing.
The band are Andy Spearpoint on vocals, who came through New Fast Automatic Daffodils, Keith Langley on drums with a history that runs through Utah Saints and the Cassandra Complex, Andy Booth on guitar, John Sullivan on guitar, and Ian Campbell on bass. Campbell grew up around Chester, spent part of his childhood in Tarvin, and is the local connection that gives this particular blog a personal stake in saying: go and listen to this.
There is a Chester show in the works. Circl8 Radio are in the process of putting something together for early next year, and given what’s on these two EPs, it should be worth the wait. We’ll have more details when they’re confirmed.
